Abstract

536,438. Withdrawal and introduction of liquids; blood transfusion apparatus. SWISS SERUM & VACCINE INSTITUTE, BERNE. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32744. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1938. [Class 81 (ii)] Relates to means for withdrawing liquids from or injecting them into the body. A plate 1, Fig. 1, is formed with an aperture receiving a member 3 traversed by a bore 2 and formed with coned ends 4, 5 adapted to receive detachably a body-puncturing needle 7 and a piercing needle 6, both of hollow form. A tube 9 screwed on to the part 3 contains a spring 10 which holds up a shell 11 provided with a socket 12 adapted to receive in fluid-tight manner a connection piece 14 at the end of a vessel 15 adapted to receive or contain liquid. The connection 14 is closed by a rubber cap 13 which may be formed with a flange 16 ; for storage purposes a glass or other cover may be fitted over it. The connection 14 may be axial as shown or may be inclined to the vessel at any angle ; for certain operations it may be constituted by the end of a tubular extension of the vessel, in which event the plate 1 is fitted with a rod 25 and handle 24 attached by a screw 23. To withdraw liquid an evacuated vessel 15 is fitted into the socket 12, needle 7 is inserted into the body, and shell 11 is pushed down and turned until a locking catch thereon engages a projection 21 on the plate. During this action needle 6 perforates cap 13 and the drained liquid is free to flow into the container ; when the flow ceases or when the vessel is full it is withdrawn from the socket, the puncture in the rubber cap 13 closing automatically, a second vessel being mounted in position if required. When it is important to prevent the entry of air into the body an additional member 38, Fig. 4, comprising a cock 42 is interposed between the core 5 and the puncturing needle. The injection of liquids into the body is carried out in a similar manner, a modified vessel closure means which allows an injection to be interrupted and subsequently completed, and is shown in Fig. 11, preferably being employed. This comprises in addition an internal rubber cap 52 held in place by a glass tube 53. Fig. 8 shows a form of liquid container especially suitable for blood transfusion operations. This comprises at the lower end an adjustable rubber stopper 26 carried by an arm 27 passing through a rubber &c. packing 28 and connected by a right- and lefthand screw tensioning device to a ring 32, and at the upper end an enlargement 34 containing an air filter 35 and closed by a plug 33 covered by a spring-controlled cap 36. For the delivery of blood to a patient a rubber bulb blower is attached to the part 34. When out of use, the needle carrier is stored in alcohol in a container 46, Fig. 9, being attached to a rubber spout 50 slipped over a piece of tubing depending from the cover, which comprises three elements, the bottom one 45 of which is adapted to be screwed up to compress a peripheral rubber ring 48 against the edge of the container. A holder 51 for the needles is also provided.
