Abstract

532,520. Knitting-machines. TOONE, H. B. S., TOONE, H. S., (trading as TOONE & CO., B.), and COLE, B. T. June 23, 1939, No. 18330. [Class 74 (ii)] A circular machine having a cutter for severing a yarn withdrawn from knitting is provided with means for regulating the length of the loose end of the yarn that projects from the fabric at the point of introduction or at the point of introduction and at the point of withdrawal. The invention is described in connection with a seamless hose machine having splicing mechanism and, in addition to a main cutter and trapper 52, an auxiliary cutter 29, 30 for the splicing yarn. The splicing yarn S is fed to the needles by a guide 10 under control similar to that employed on Scott and Williams machines, and on an arm 16 pivoted about the same axis 14 as the guide 10 a yarn-tensioning device 19 is provided. The arm 16 is operated from the guide 10, an adjustable screw 17 carried by the arm resting upon a pin 18 projecting from the guide, and the lowermost position of the arm is determined by a second adjustable screw 20 engaging the feeder bracket 15. Thus, when the splicing guide 10 is lowered into feeding position, the arm 16 and the tensioning device 19 carried by it are brought to rest before the guide reaches its feeding position so that the tensioning device draws back the loose end of the yarn through the guide 10. The extent of this draw-back, which is regulated by adjusting the screws 17, 20, determines the length of the loose end of the thread projecting from the fabric at the commencement of a splicing course. The movable blade 30 of the cutter is operated by a lever 61 overlying an adjustable tappet screw 28 carried by the arm 16. When the guide 10 is raised, the arm 16 is lifted, and after a lag determined by the adjustment of the screw 28 the lever 61 is actuated to operate the blade 30. The lag between the withdrawal of the splicing yarn and the operation of the blade determines the distance between the cutter and the last splicing needle at the point of severance, and so regulates the length of the loose yarn projecting from the fabric at the withdrawal of the yarn. A tapper may be associated with the cutter 29, 30 and may comprise a blunt knife blade in advance of the blade 30. In a modification, the lever arm 61 is dispensed with, and the tappet screw 28 engages directly with an arm carrying the cutter blade 30. The lever 61 may support a bent wire member 63 so disposed that when the lever is actuated the wire enters between the two discs forming the yarn tensioning device 19 to release the friction on the splicing yarn to prevent the loose end of the yarn acquiring undue twist such as would cause it to fly about when cut. Alternatively, or in addition, the yarn may be guided after it has left the guide 10 by the slotted end 66<SP>1</SP> of a lever 66 arranged within the needle circle. Specification 532,586 is referred to.
