[Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIX] In a repeater for connection in a submarine or other cable, the pieces of apparatus A, such as valves, transformers, resistances and so on, are mounted on the sides of metal discs D which are rigidly held together by rods R to permit their mounting in a water-tight casing of circular or elliptical cross-section to form several compartments. A central tube T passing through holes in the discs and having apertures O between each pair of discs carries the wiring W between the compartments. The rods R are insulated from the discs and may be covered with insulation so that they may support the wiring within the compartments. In Fig. 1 the casing C is bolted at each end to a plate DIS which receives the cable ends, and the discs D have spacing pieces SP which bear against the inner wall of the casing. In Fig. 2, the casing PC is of pot form and the rods Rare secured in bosses BT, BS on the plate DIS and on the base of the pot. The discs may be earthed in order to form screens between the compartments. In the arrangement shown for leading in the cable, the end EC of the cable is jointed at J to a stub of concentric cable, of which the inner conductor IC with its covering of insulation PA is passed through a hole in the plate DIS where it is sealed by means of further insulation S, packing material WP and a plug PS. The outer conductor OC is connected by a lug LU to the plate DIS, which may be suitably connected to the casing. The armouring wires AW of the cable are wrapped over a conical sleeve CS and are clamped in a groove in a headplate H by an outer sleeve CC, these members being secured to the plate DIS by long bolts LB. An end cap E covers the whole joint.
