Class 74 (ii)] A straight-bar machine provided with automatic welt-turning mechanism having a supplementary take-up roller for use during the formation of the welt has automatic means for raising the take-up weight G and retaining all or part of it in the raised position so that the tension on the work is removed or reduced. The invention is described in connection with a machine as described in Specification 525,976 in which the string wheel A is secured to the shaft B carrying the supplementary take-up rollers C. A pinion is secured to the shaft B and is rotated to wind up the weight cord F by a sliding rack E under control of a cam J on the main.shaft K. The cam truck H<SP>1</SP> is moved into and out of engagement with the cam J by an arm L secured to a shaft M, adjustable longitudinally by studs on a pattern shaft. Pivoted arms N are movable into the path of the weight G by levers O<SP>3</SP> and links O<SP>2</SP> under control of studs on the pattern chain. The discs forming the weight G may be of increasing diameter from the bottom upwards, or plates G<SP>1</SP> of greater diameter may be inserted between the discs, and the studs on the pattern chain may be of varying heights so that the arms N can engage part only or all of the discs, so that part only or all of the weight G may be taken by the arms N.
