531,098. Stuffing-box and piston packing. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and OLIVER, A. V. July 5, 1939, No. 19596. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] Packing for a plunger, piston &c. consists of a ring 21 of soft resilient material, such as indiarubber, and an endless ring 15 of harder material, such as phosphor bronze or synthetic resin, which is formed with slits, notches &c. 16 extending alternately from opposite edges, so that it can be easily changed in length in a circumferential direction. It may also be formed from bent wire. The harder ring is pressed by the soft ring against the member 10 to be sealed. The soft ring may be of L or U-shape in cross-section. The two rings may be secured together
