[Class 74 (ii)] 'A circular machine is provided with at least one thread guide 1 so actuated that its threadguiding portion 3 moves in a path substantially tangentially with respect to the needle circle. The invention is described in connection with a superposed cylinder machine, and in one form a thread guide 1 is provided for feeding an elastic thread to the needles. The thread guide 1 consists of a blade-like member slidably mounted. The movement of the member is determined by pins 7 secured to the bracket 10 upon which the member 1 is slidably mounted, and the member 1 has a slot 4 within which the pins engage. The slot 4 may have an inclined portion 8 so that the thread-guiding portion of the member 1 is given also a small radial movement. The member 1 is so controlled that, after laying the thread between the hooks and latches of one or more of the needles, it is retracted to a position in which the thread is missed by the closing latches and is run into the fabric without being formed into knitted loops. Before being rendered inoperative, the thread guide is advanced so that the thread is again engaged by the closing latches and knitted by one or more needles. The thread guide 1 is operated from the main timing or controlling drum or from an auxiliary patterning unit. Thread trapping and severing means are mounted upon the bracket 10 and comprise an inner fixed trapper plate 12, an outer fixed cutting plate or blade 13, and an intermediate movable cutter blade 14. Yarn changing mechanism as described in Specification 519,049 may be provided. A modification is described, in which a main yard guide, and a guide for the heel and toe yarn, are mounted with a guide 1 for an elastic thread guide 1 for movement in a path more or less tangential to the needle circle.
