Abstract

528,812. Metal-vapour converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., DONALDSON, D. H., and RAMSAY, H. T. May 15,1939, No. 14481. Addition to 515,175. [Class 39 (i)] In mercury arc converters as described in the parent Specification, the normally continuous jet 5 of mercury is supplied from the cathode 1, as by a pump 8, through a channel 7, which forms the secondary 9 of a transformer, and means are provided for causing an intermittent or alternating current to flow in the primary 11. The jet may be broken to start the arc by the sudden interruption or starting of the current in the primary, by means independent of the current flowing through the jet, such as discharging a condenser across the secondary 9 or by means of a magnetic field transverse to the current flowing in the jet.
