Abstract

528,336. Cigarette-making machines. RUAU, F. F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. May 4, 1939, No. 13340. [Class 130] In a tipping apparatus for continuous-rod machines, in which a tip is severed from a web of tipping material such as cork and is adhesively secured to a web of cigarette paper in such a manner that the tip extends over the edge of the paper web, means is arranged to apply adhesive, prior to the tip being engaged with the paper web, to the edge of the tip which is to project, and the rear side of the tip, prior to the tip being engaged with the paper web, is engaged by a heating element to make the adhesive tacky. As shown, the cork web passes from a reel 1 over a guide roller 5 and a roller 6 which applies adhesive to an edge portion 9 of the cork web. The rear surface of the web then passes over a roller 11 heated by an electric resistance and driven through worm gearing 19, 20 at a greater peripheral speed than the web so as to tension the web. The web then passes to means for severing a tip and applying it to a pasted area on a cigarette-paper web. The tacky edge 9 of the tip forms a seam when the formation of a cigarette rod is completed. A starting handle 24 is arranged to lift the cork web, by means of a pin 26 on a lever 21, out of contact with the paste roller 6 when the apparatus is at rest.
