Abstract
527,729. Coating surfaces ; cellulose derivative lacquers. COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORPORATION. April 14, 1939, No. 11362. Convention date, April 29, 1938. [Class 95] [Also in Group IV] A process for spray-coating a surface with a cellulose derivative lacquer containing a concentration of solids producing an undesirably high viscosity for spraying at room temperature, is characterized by providing in the solvent component of the lacquer one or more slowly evaporating constituents of such a character and in such a proportion as to prevent substantial ebullition at the spraying temperature, and to secure the desired flow characteristics in the applied film, heating the lacquer, without decomposition, to reduce its viscosity to that desired at the spraying temperature, and spraying the hot lacquer on to the surface. Spraying temperatures up to 120‹C. or over may be used, but temperatures not exceeding 90‹C. are preferable. The solvent component of the lacquers should have a higher solvent-diluent ratio than that used in lacquers for roomtemperature spraying. Specified ingredients of various solvent-components are ethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, butyl alcohol, butyl acetate, butyl propionate, methyl lactate, acetone, 1-nitro-butane, diacetone alcohol, toluol, xylol and solvent naphtha. Examples are given of nitro-cellulose-alkyd resin lacquers for application at 25‹C., 90‹C. and 110‹C., of cellulose acetate lacquers for application at 25‹C., 50‹C., 90‹C. and 120‹C., and of ethyl cellulose-ester gum lacquers for application at 25‹C., 50‹C., 90‹C. and 110‹C. Addition specified ingredients. are dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate and carbon black. Specification 516,973 is referred to.
