Abstract

In the preparation of coloured coating compositions for leather, a vinyl compound is mixed with another film-forming substance such as a cellulose ester, or a second vinyl compound. For example, polyvinyl acetate is dissolved in a solvent and a colour such as lithol scarlet or Sudan black is added, and the resulting mixture is incorporated with a solution of cellulose nitrate or a mixture of cellulose nitrates of differing degrees of nitration. The composition is applied to leather or goatskin by spraying or pouring, and when dry the coating is glazed, polished, or grained. Solvents such as butyl acetate or alcohol, ethyl acetate or methyl cyclohexanone, together with diluents such as ethyl alcohol, or toluol may be used, and plasticizers such as triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate, butyl oxalate, castor or linseed oil, or dibutyl phthalate, are added. In a modification, the coating composition consists of a mixture of vinyl compounds only of differing viscosity. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the treatment of the dry coloured coating with a transparent coating of the composition, omitting the pigment. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
