Abstract
527,707. Winches. RICHARDS, S. H., and LLOYD, H. J. April 4, 1939, No. 10498. [Class 78 (v)] In winding mechanism the cable A is passed round two power-driven grooved drums C, D which are, displaced angularly to one another so that the cable passes directly from each groove of one drum to the appropriate groove of the other. The drums C, D are located one on each side of a central shaft 5 driven through chain-wheels 10, and the gearing 6, 7, 8 employed is helical spur. The axis of the shaft 1 of drum C is angled out of parallelism with that 2 of drum D in such a way that the axes still lie in planes which are parallel and which are at right angles to the shortest line joining the axes. Fig. 1 shows the device applied to a balloon cable A which first passes round a pair of surge drums B, then round the winding drums C, D and finally reaches a reservoir drum E geared to the power means driving the drums C, D. A slipping clutch may be inserted in the power drive.
