Abstract
527,660. Drying webs. OFFEN, B. April 18, 1939, No. 11693. [Class 34 (i)] Webs particularly of printed paper are dried by passage over rollers 20 and under a hood in which air is blown from channels 16a, 16b through inwardly directed nozzles 22a, 22b on to the paper and air is withdrawn through a central exhaust passage 11, 13 in close proximity to the paper, whence the air passes to atmosphere or to a solvent recovery plant; air having a lower solvent vapour content is withdrawn through separate side exhaust passages 12, 14, whence it is recirculated by a fan 25 to the paper with fresh air entering by an aperture 29 with adjustable baffles. A fan 25a exhausts air from the passage 13, to a chamber 15 and outlet 16. The air supply hoods 16a, 16b separated by the passage 13 are tapered from the fan across the chamber and may be longitudinally subdivided by partitions 37 into compartments each with a heater 33a so that air of different temperatures is projected on different parts of the paper. The separate exhaust passages may be connected by a slidable plate 28. Baffles 32 adjust the amount of air returned to circulation and when closed, only fresh air is projected on the paper. Fine mesh wire screens may protect the nozzles from flames from the web. Partitions 14a form the exhaust passages 14 into triangles. Specification 477,684 is referred to.
