Abstract

526,890. Moulding pellets in extrusion machines. THOMPSON, J. H., and SPROUT, WALDRON & CO. March 21, 1939, No. 8958. [Class 87 (ii)] A machine for moulding pellets, nodules &c. comprises a rotary cylindrical die 33, with apertures 35 and rollers 38, 39, 40 which successively press material supplied to the cylinder against the inner surface and force it through the apertures so that the moulded bodies can be removed by a scraper 61. The cylinder 33 is fixed to a carrier 20 which has roller bearings 18, 19 on a fixed sleeve 14 and is rotated by means of a sprocket 41. The rollers 38, 39, 40 have the form of truncated cones and are mounted with roller bearings on pins 58 screwed into a spider 53 fixed on the reduced end 52 of a tapered spindle 49 wedged into an eccentric bore of the sleeve 14. With this mounting the three rollers can be adjusted together circumferentially relatively to the die 33, without altering their respective distances from the inner surface of the die. The latter can be adjusted by turning the spindle 49 within the eccentric bore of the sleeve. The material under treatment is supplied through a hopper 36 at the side. A form of apparatus is described in which the sleeve 14 rotates as well as the die, so that the rollers move round relatively to the die. If the sleeve is driven the die may be rotated by friction due to the rollers.
