[Class 143] [Also in Group XXXIV] Steelyard apparatus; relieving and locking mechanism. - In a sliding - weight platform balance the poise weight 26, Figs. 2, 9, is provided with an inclined sliding surface 26<SP>1</SP> on to which the poise is rocked when disengaging the nib 30 from the notches of the beam 25, the centre of gravity of the poise being located so as to re-engage the nib when the poise is liberated. A second beam 27 of tubular form carries a minor poise weight 28 which may be adjusted by an internal screw rotated by a knob 37. The free end of the beam 25 terminates in a pointer 41 and may be locked both laterally and vertically by rotating a knob 42. Compound - lever apparatus. - Compoundlevers within the frame 1 support a scale pan 19, and one lever has an arm 29 projecting through the frame and supporting the beams 25, 27. Bearings.-In Fig. 16 is shown a fulcrum bearing for one of the compound-levers. The knife-edge 7 of the lever rests upon a semicylindrical seating 9 supported in the frame 1 so as to align itself with the knife-edge. A similar self-aligning arrangement, supported by a swinging link is used for the fulcrum of the other compound lever. In a modification, Fig. 20, the semi-cylindrical seating is supported on a vertically-adjustable block 15. The seatings'may be made of sheet metal supported so as to rock into alignment with their knife-edges. Similar self-aligning seatings of sheet metal may support the legs of the scale-pan support. Taring and adjusting devices.-A taring weight movable along one of the compound levers may be adjusted by a screw operated by an external knob. A compensating weight is also carried by the lever. An adjusting weight moved by a screw 52, Fig. 2, is provided in the arm 29.
