[Class 102 (ii)] In apparatus for raising milk or other liquids comprising a pump chamber 1 provided with an automatically closing discharge valve 2 and which communicates by a pipe 4 with a source of pulsating vacuum and with a suction pipe 3 for the liquid which in turn is connected to the bottom of a container 6 situated at a lower level than the pump chamber, the container is provided with a valve 8 which automatically closes the suction pipe when the level of the liquid in the container approaches the outlet 7 therefrom, thereby preventing the entry of air into the suction pipe. The outlet 7 may be in the form of a throttling nozzle, the valve 8 may be a rubber ball which rolls down the sloping bottom of the container, and the suction pipe may be fitted with a non-return supply valve 5 at about the level of the bottom of the container. In a modification, the non-return supply valve is disposed close to the outlet 7.
