[Class 78 (iii)] Portable hand trucks of the kind in which lifting-platforms are connected to balancing platforms on which the operator stands to overbalance and raise the lifting-platforms, are constructed with a wheeled chassis supporting two H-shaped columns providing inner and outer guideways for the two platforms respectively. Thus, the lifting-platform 12, which is rollerguided in the outer channels of the H-columns 10, is connected by chains 16 to the balancing platform 14, which is roller-guided on the inner channels of these columns, and carries brakeoperating mechanism 25 or a hand-lever 28, Fig. 5, which is used to project locking pins 27 into one or other of the spaced holes 26 to lock the platforms in position. The mechanism 25 rotates a horizontal screw-threaded shaft 21 and thus moves a nut axially to the left. The nut forms part of a bar carrying brake shoes at the ends and causes the shoes to bind against the left-hand walls of the inner channels of the columns. Parts of the platform 14 may extend adjacent to the brake shoes on the opposite sides of the columns and co-operate with the brake shoes in binding on the columns. Steps and a hand-rail may be associated with the columns to enable the operator to climb up to the platform 14 in its raised position. In some cases the columns may be extensible as shown at 30, Fig. 1.
