Abstract

524,958. Regulating gas compressors. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. Feb. 10, 1939, No. 4497. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1938. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A compressor 7 is driven by an internal combustion engine 1 which has a speed governor 25 loaded by a spring 33, the compression of which is adjusted by a lever 67 engaging a plunger 59. The lever 67 is connected by a link to a bellows 83 in a chamber 74 which is connected through an orifice 78 to the receiver. Receiver pressure acts on a diaphragm 97 connected to a rod 102, which is connected to the bellows 83 by a lever 87 carrying a valve 114 cooperating with an orifice 86 which is larger than orifice 78. As the receiver pressure increases, the valve 114 opens the orifice 86 and releases the pressure in the chamber 74 until at a predetermined high pressure the governor is set to a minimum speed control. If the pressure increases, the receiver pressure acting in a member in casing 179 causes a valve in the compressor inlet 9 to close gradually, until it is shut at a predetermined maximum pressure. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the rod 71 is connected to a hollow rod 130 connected to a bellows 128 in a chamber 118 connected by an orifice 123 to the induction pipe of the internal combustion engine. The rod 130 has an orifice 133 which is opened and closed by a lever 138 connected to a rod 141 which is secured to a diaphragm 143 exposed to receiver pressure. A spring 158 extends between the end of the lever 138 and a collar 157 which when the pressure is rising engages a recess 168 in the lever 138 until the predetermined high pressure is reached, when it moves to the other side of the projection 162. The lever 138 is held in this manner until the receiver pressure has fallen to a low value, when the collar moves again to the recess 168.
