Abstract
524,040. Colour development. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Jan. 20, 1939, No. 2002. [Class 98 (ii)] A colour forming developer comprises an aromatic amino developing agent and a colour coupler of the formula shown in Fig. 1, where X represents a hydrogen atom or a nitro group and one or more nitro groups are present in the molecule. Other substituents may be present, either in the ring containing the hydroxyl group or in the ring containing the nitro group or groups. Examples specified are 5-nitro-1- naphthol, 2-4-dichloro-5-nitro-1-naphthol, 2:3:4- trichloro-5-nitro-1-naphthol, 5-nitro-1-naphthol - 4-sulphonic acid, 2:4-dibromo-5-nitro-1-naphthol, 2:4-dichloro-5-acetamino-8-nitro-1-naphthol, and 2:4-dichloro-5-benzenesulphonamino- 8-nitro-1-naphthol. The colour coupler may be incorporated in the emulsion and may then be substituted by a high molecular or long chain substituent. The colour coupler may be absorbed on the silver halide grains. A formula for a colour forming developer is given. The aromatic amino developing agents may be mono-, di-, and tri-aminoaryl compounds in particular aminophenols and aminocresols and their halogen substituted derivatives, aminonaphthols, p-phenylenediamine and its derivatives substituted in the amino group or in the ring or in both, such as mono-methyl-pphenylenediamine, dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine, diethyl-p-phenylenediamine, toluylenediamines, alkyl-toluylenediamines and aminodiphenylamines, and o-aminodiethylaniline. The dyes formed have an increased absorption in the near infra-red and an improved transmission in the green, and the ability of the colour developing solutions to penetrate photographic emulsions is improved. The emulsions may have a gelatin or other binder, and may be coated on plates, films, or paper. Differently colour sensitized emulsion layers may be superimposed on one or both sides of the support, or emulsions of the mixed grain type may be used.
