Abstract
1,061,294. Photographic colour processes. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Aug. 21, 1963 [Aug. 28, 1962], No.33067/63. Heading G2C. Direct colour positive images are produced by imagewise exposing an internal type silver halide emulsion containing a colour coupler in the emulsion layer or an adjacent layer and developing the exposed layer with a colour developer in the presence of a hydrazide or a hydrazone which does not contain a quaternary atom and has the Formula R-NH-NH-R' or R-NH-N=R<2> where R is aryl or substituted aryl, R' is acyl and R<2> is alkylidene or substituted alkylidene. The aryl radical may be substituted by alkyl, amino, alkoxy or aryloxy, alkyl- or aryl-sulphonamides or -carbonamido or heterocyclic amino, sulphonamido or carbonamido radicals whereas the alkylidene radical may be substituted by an alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical. The hydrazide or hydrazone may be present in the emulsion or the developer, and the developer may be in the emulsion. Transferred direct positive dye images are produced by using colour coupler of structure DYE-LINK-(COUP-BALL)n or BALL-LINK- (COUP-SOL)n where DYE is a dye radical containing an acidic solubilizing radical, LINK is a connecting radical such as azo, azoxy, -Hg-, -O-, > CH-, =CH-, thio or dithio, which is split by the oxidation products of the colour developer, COUP is a coupler radical substituted in the coupler position with LINK, BALL is an organic radical of sufficient size to render the coupler non-diffusing in the alkaline developer solution, SOL is either a hydrogen atom or an acidic solubilizing group and n is 1 or 2 when LINK is alkylidene and 1 when LINK is other than alkylidene, and treating the exposed emulsion in the presence of a hydrazide or a hydrazone solution which breaks the LINK in the coupler to produce a diffusible dye which is transferred to a mordanted receiving sheet kept in contact with the exposed emulsion during development. The hydrazide or hydrazone may be incorporated in the receiving sheet in the mordanted layer or an overcoated layer. The emulsion may contain three layers sensitive to red, green and blue respectively, each layer containing a colour coupler forming or releasing a dye complementary in colour to the colour to which the emulsion is sensitive and normally barrier layers are put between the emulsions, one barrier layer acting as a filter layer.
