Abstract

523,146. Filters. HUNYADI, V. L., and KOCH, J. Sept. 24, 1938, No. 27923. [Class 46] [Also in Group XXVIII] In apparatus for filtering used oil, the filtrate on its way from the filter 34, Fig. 1, to a still or steam blower 68 passes through an upper container 44 in which air is confined above the oil. When, due to clogging of the filter elements 90, the pressure within the filter rises, a piston 48a closes a valve 48d in the pipe 45, which connects the container 44 to the still. The rising pressure in the pipe 45 then moves a piston 51 to open a valve 36 through which sludge collected on the inclined bottom 34a is discharged. At the same time the air in the container 44 causes a reverse flow of oil, which detaches solid matter from the filter elements. As shown oil is passed by a pump 2 through a heat-exchanger 4 to the lower compartment of a tank 6 in which it is mixed with a purifying agent supplied from an upper compartment. From the tank 6 the oil is drawn by a pump 32 through a pipe 31 and delivered into the filter 34 through a pipe 33. The filter is fitted with a float-operated air outlet valve 65. Each filter element 90 comprises a perforated cone or conical piston covered by a resilient multi-layer coating of wire net or gauze, and an outer layer of linen or paper. The pumps 2, 32. feeding blades 8 in the upper compartment of the tank 6 and mixing blades 20 in the lower compartment are all driven from an electric motor 21 by means of a yoke 19. The, drive includes telescoping rods 75, 76, the rod 75 being attached to a ring 86, sliding on the tubular rod 76, by means of a pin 87, which engages longitudinal slots in the rod 76. A helical spring 85 bears against the ring 86. The arrangement is such that the length of the combined rods 75. 76 and 'the strokes of the pumps become shorter with increase of load. In modified apparatus shown in Fig. 5, the valve 48d in the pipe 45 is closed at intervals in accordance with the amount of oil supplied to the filter by a cam 77 on the shaft 11 of the blades 8. The valve is reopened by a rod 79, the opposite end of which is operated by the lever of the sludge-outlet valve 36..
