Abstract

522,614. Food for animals. HERBST, W. Dec. 14, 1938, No. 36461-. [Class 5 (ii)] [Also in- Group IV] Cellulose meal for use as a foodstuff for animals is produced by subjecting cellulosic material to a treatment with dilute acid, insufficient in intensity to destroy the cellulose fibres or to convert the cellulose into hydrocellulose but sufficient to render the cellulose fibres capable of destruction by wet grinding in a mill such as a disc mill or a beater, freeing the material from acid by washing with water or by neutralizing and then grinding in the moist or dry condition. Where the material is ground in the moist condition it may be subjected to a final grinding after drying: Suitable cellulosic material is sulphite or soda cellulose, cotton, flax bast or straw, while the acid employed may be a mineral acid such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, sulphurous or nitric acid. The cellulosic material may be treated before or after the acid treatment with alkali solutions such as hot caustic soda lye, or soda solution or other resindissolving agents. In examples (1) ordinary commercial bleached sulphite cellulose is boiled in 1 per cent. hydrochloric acid for 15 to 60 minutes, washed free of acid, boiled with 0.5 per cent. soda solution for 15 minutes, washed, partially hydro-extracted, ground, dried and finally ground a second time, (2) ordinary commercial bleached sulphite cellulose is boiled in 1 per cent. hydrochloric acid for 15 to 60 minutes, freed from acid by neutralizing or washing, dried and ground, (3) cellulose is subjected to the usual sulphite boiling process in the presence of free sulphurous acid, washed, partially hydro-extracted, ground, dried, boiled for 15 minutes in 0.5 per cent. caustic soda lye, washed and finally dried.
