Abstract
521,194. Spray carburetters. TRIGGS, W. W. (Leibing Automotive Devices, Inc.). Oct. 12, 1938, No. 29520. [Class 7 (iii)] The supply of idling fuel to a carburetter is completely cut off if the suction exceeds that normally present during idling, and slowrunning periods such as may occur during overrunning an engine when a vehicle, descends a slope. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 a throttle valve (arranged as in Fig. 2) comprising two plates pivoted on parallel axes controls the mixture passage and the plates at their meeting edges are cut away at 24 to surround closely an idling nozzle 29<1> and are formed opposite a transition nozzle 28<1> as a closed cup 25. Projecting into an orifice at 62 is a nozzle x through which the pressure in the inlet pipe is conveyed to a diaphragm 67 connected to a valve 55, 73 for regulating the fuel admission from a duct 54. In operation, during idling, the nozzle 29 is subjected to the suction below the. throttle valves and to the injector action of air flowing past the nozzle, the fuel being emulsified by air drawn through the transition nozzle 28; slight opening of the throttles checks the flow of aerating air and brings the nozzle 28<1> into use to supply fuel. During Overrunning of the engine, the fuel supply to the idling and transition nozzles is cut off automatically by a movement of the diaphragm 67 which responds to the rapid pressure, changes adjacent the throttle valve. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the duct 76, which is the equivalent of the nozzle x shown in Fig. 1, is connected to the inlet passage during closed throttle conditions. through a passage 75 formed between the plates, of the valve. Fig. 5 shows a< >construction embodying a butterfly valve 86 the rim of which is cut away, to leave a sharp edge opposite the suction passage 102. Fuel discharged through the passages 89 and 91 adjacent the edge of the throttle valve is. controlled by a valve 99 carried by a diaphragm subject to the pressure transmitted through the pipe connection 101.
