[Class 98 (i)] In a focal-plane photographic shutter slow exposures are timed by an escapement mechanism driven by a rack carried by a mount which, after initial movement of the blinds to form an exposure opening, is moved by an element rotating with one of the blinds to cause the rack to engage a ratchet on the escapement mechanism, the mount then acting as a stop for the rotating element until moved out of its path by the traversing movement of the rack, whereupon the element is freed and allows the shutter to close, the time of exposure being controlled by the duration of the driving contact between the rack and ratchet which is predetermined by the position of a manually-controlled speed-regulating member. The shutter described embodying the invention is the same as that described in Specification 520,957, in which a spring driven delay action gear train is connected with the escapement mechanism by a one-way coupling so that the latter is also employed to control the delay action.
