Abstract

519,758. Drying grain; charging. RILEY, G: W. and SCOTT & SON (LONDON), Ltd., G. Oct. 14, 1938, No. 29868. [Class 34 (ii)] In treating or drying grain or the like in vacuo in which the grain passes a vacuumtight valve 17 from a feed member 5 above it, an auxiliary cut-off member 22 is interposed between the feed 5 and valve 17 in the path of the grain and means are provided to move the member 22 to withhold grain from the valve 17 while the latter closes. The member 22 opens when the valve 17 is half opened and comprises a flat or curved plate with side plates 24 hinged at 23 to the casing of the feed 'chute 5. The plates 24 are connected by connecting rods 26, 28 to a piston rod 30 of a fluid-operated piston 20 which actuates the valve 17 through a rod 18. The grain is dried in two superposed vacuum chambers, as described in Specification 479,090, which is referred to, and the cut-off member 22 may be applied to any vacuum-tight valve of this apparatus, including the discharge valve.
