Abstract

519,476. Delivering stemmed tobacco leaves. INTERNATIONAL CIGAR MACHINERY CO. Oct. 18, 1938, No. 30104. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1937. [Class 130] Stemmed tobacco leaves are forwarded tip foremost by belts 10, 11 and received between adjacent runs of belts 13, 14 which are carried upwardly from rollers 15, 16 to a driving roller 17 and then downwardly on guides 40, 41 which are reciprocated to enable the leaves to be laid progressively on a screen 66. To prevent slipping of the leaves, the inner run of the belt 13 is supported by a flanged plate 60 secured to the arms 40, 41 and to the inner run of the belt 14 by strips 62 on bars 63 extending between the arms 40, 41. The outer run of the belt 13 passes around rollers 19, 21, 22 and a tensioning pulley 23 back to the roller 15 while the outer run of the belt 14 passes around a tensioning pulley 24 back to the roller 16, these outer runs being supported by guides 94. The arms 40, 41 are reciprocated by arms 49, 51 connected by a rod 47 to a crankpin 45 carried by a gear wheel 44 meshing with a wheel 43 and by adjustment of the crank gear 43, 44 or the gear ratio the leaves may be in a single row on the screen or in a double row with the leaves of the rows in tip'-to-tip or butt-to-butt relation with their ends overlapping. The screens may be stationary or intermittently advanced to enable the leaves to be booked or the screens may be supported by an endless belt which is continuously advanced beneath the delivery mechanisms of stemming machines using different kinds of tobacco leaves so that blended layers of leaves are delivered on to the screens. 'Rotating brushes 87, 99 assist the removal of the leaves from the belts 11, 14. A rotating brush 12 which normally directs the stemmed leaves from the belts 10, 11 to the belts 13, 14 is swung away from the belts to prevent the delivery of unstemmed leaves to the belts 13, 14. The brush 12 is actuated by a lever 70 which is operated by electro-magnetic mechanism when an unstemmed leaf passes beneath a detecting device disposed in advance of the belts 10, 11.
