Abstract
518,149. Ethylene derivatives. BOOTS PURE DRUG CO., Ltd., SHORT, W. F., and LEVENE, H. H. L. Sept. 21, 1938, No. 27554. [Class 2 (iii)] Mono-chlorinated derivatives of ethylene in which the other three hydrogen atoms of the ethylene are substituted by.the same or different aromatic groups are prepared by treating the corresponding triaryl ethylene dissolved in a suitable solvent with chlorine. The products possess oestrogenic properties. The starting materials used in the process may be formed by simple reactions, for example, triphenyl ethylene can be prepared by reacting benzophenone with benzyl magnesium chloride and dehydrating the triphenyl ethyl alcohol so formed with phosphorus trichloride. In the example triphenylethylene is dissolved in glacial acetic acid and chlorine is passed in to give triphenylchlorethylene.
