Abstract
517,425. Contrast media for X-ray photographs. BRANSCOMBE, D. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, LTD. July 25, 1938, No. 22091. [Class 81 (i)] Compositions suitable for use as X-ray contrast agents comprise dispersions in water or aqueous media or solutions in a bland oil of esters of saturated or unsaturated aliphatic alcohols with mono- or poly-iodo aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic carboxylic acids. X-ray photographs are made by introducing the compositions by direct administration or bv intravenous injection into the part of the body concerned followed by irradiation and the taking of the X-ray photograph. Suitable esters which may be made by the process of Specification 517,382, [Group IV], include octadecenyl 2 : 5-diiodobenzoate, octadecenyl 2 : 3: 5-triiodobenzoate, octadecenyl 3 : 4: 5-triiodophenylacetate, octadecenyl o-iodobenzoate, dodecyl o-iodobenzoate, and cetyl o-iodobenzoate. In an example octadecenyl 2 : 3 : 5- triiodobenzoate is directly introduced into the trachea of a human subject and the X-ray photograph then taken shows a sharply defined image of the bronchial tree. The Provisional Specification also refers to the visual observation of the X-ray image on a fluorescent screen.
