Abstract

516,811. Yarns. HARRISON, P. E. July 9, 1938, No. 20415. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] Yarns of high tensile strength and resistant to heat suitable for use as tyre cords are formed by drawing untwisted roving, impregnating with a cohesive liquid which is heat resistant when dry, thereafter removing excess liquid by pressure, and spinning the roving or rovings to form a single strand yarn in a continuous operation. As described, three slivers S are drawn, impregnated in a bath 21, squeezed by rollers 22, and twisted together by ring twisting-apparatus, a dryer, Fig. 3 (not shown) being provided if necessary. Suitable impregnating materials are uncoagulated rubber or latex, suspensions or dispersions of elastic or plastic material which will coagulate, polymerise, or condense in the interior of the yarn such as vulcanised latex, tannic acid, bicarbonates of alkaline earths, synthetic resins, synthetic waxes, proteins such as casein, and cellulose esters.
