Abstract

A cord ply for reinforcing resilient plastics or rubber, e.g. for reinforcing pneumatic tyres, conveyor belts or driving belts, comprises a number of parallel filaments 8 adherently held together by connectors 9 in the form of staple fibres extending transversely to the direction of the filaments 8 and which connectors do not touch each other for the greater part of their length, each connector extending on one side of the cord ply. Preferably, the connectors 9 have a much smaller cross-section perpendicularly to their length than the ply-forming filaments 8. Tangled dry fibres 9 are blown onto or applied in fleece form to the filaments 8 as they leave a dip bath. Slight pressure is applied to the fibres 9 by a roller or bar. Alternatively, a thermoplastic fibre fleece may be applied by heat softening between heated rolls before the filaments 8 are dipped or a non-thermoplastic fibre fleece, e.g. cotton, may be sprayed with adhesive and applied to the filaments 8 prior to dipping. In a modification, the staple fibres may be of manila hemp. Specified adhesives are emulsions or solutions of polymers or copolymers of organic vinyl compounds, more particularly those having functional groups. The filaments 8 may be multifilaments, monofilaments, yarns or threads and may be of natural fibres, glass fibres, metal wires or synthetic filaments, e.g. rayon or polyamide.
