515,950. Emergency exits for vehicles, fastenings. ARMSTRONG, A. C. H. June 15, 1938, No. 17753. [Classes 103 (iv) and 108 (i)] [Also in Groups X and XXV] In order to provide an emergency exit from rail or road vehicles or. aircraft in the event of a collision, fire, or other accident, the retaining- latches of doors, windows, sliding panels &c. are released by electro-magnets, the circuit of which is closed, e.g., by the contact of bumpers in the case of a collision, by a mercury gravity switch in the case of overturning, or by thermostatic switch in the case of fire whereupon the doors, windows &c. open automatically under their own weight or under the influence of springs as shown in Fig 1 a motor-coach is fitted with front and rear bumpers e and with side bumpers e' which, in the event of a collision, are pressed inwardly against the action of restoring springs to complete an electric circuit including solenoids h which release the latches k<1>, Fig. 6, of-the windows, doors &c. In the case of windows these may be of a non-adjustable type (b, Fig. 1) or of an adjustable type (c, c<1>, Figs. 6 and 8), and in the latter instance it may be necessary to disengage the operating pinion n from the rack o before the window can be lowered by the springs or by gravity. Instead of operating the latches k<1> directly the solenoids h may, as shown in Fig. 5, operate one or a series of latches t by means of toggle links r and a sliding rod s<1>. Similar arrangements are described for releasing the latches of doors and sliding roof panels, while the 'electric circuit shown also includes a mercury gravity switch y and a thermostatic switch z.
