515,112. Phenol-aldehyde resins. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. May 24, 1938, No. 15464. Convention date, May 24, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Liquid phenol-aldehyde condensates are mixed with aralkyl chloride sulphonic acids or derivatives thereof, e.g., salts such as alkali or alkaline earth salts, or esters, amides or anilides, with or without metal dioxides, aralkyl chlorides or sulphates, or aromatic sulphochlorides. Specified additions are o- or p-benzyl chloride sulphonic acid sodium salt, ester or amide, or derivatives of xylene sulphonic acids chlorinated in the side-chain. Fillers may also be added. The product may be used in cements, plaster, and coating compositions ; and, after hardening, as shaped articles. In an example a liquid phenolformaldehyde condensate is mixed with quartz, 'barium sulphate, and p-(chlormethyl) benzene sulphochloride or a mixture of p-toluene - sulphochloride and sodium p-benzyl chloride sulphonate.
