Abstract

514,891. Air-raid shelters. BRAITHWAITE & CO. ENGINEERS, Ltd., and LAMOND, A. April 19, 1938, No. 11736. [Class 20 (i)] An air - raid or like shelter is formed in sections each comprising wall and roof units constituted by metal plates which are flanged along all edges for bolting &c. together and so that any length of shelter may be built-up by abutments of the continuous end-flanges of the sections. Similarly - flanged floor units, and plain end walls, may be butt-jointed to the main flanged units. Figs. 3 and 4 show a typical shelter comprising walls 1 and roof units 4 formed of flanged plates such as that shown in Fig. 7, with eave and ridge members 3, 5 formed of narrower flanged plates. An air-lock &c. entrance may be built-up of similar plates 21, 23. The end-walls 20 are formed by plain metal plates bolted &c. to the end-flanges of the units. Figs. 12 and 13 show a modified shelter with a manhole and ladder entrance 50 at an end and a stairway and door at the other, the roof being formed of pairs of angled-plates the edge flanges of which are directly connected to one another and to the top flanges of the wall units.
