Abstract
514,384. Wood and straw pulp. WOHL, A. April 28, 1938, Nos. 12742 and 12743. Convention dates, April 28, 1937, and May 24, 1937. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Wood is reduced to fibres by mechanical treatment after it has been heated with dilute solutions of mineral acids in such quantities and concentrations that more acid is present than is required for the neutralization of the " ash alkalinity and that the hydrolytic action does not substantially exceed that of 0.5 per cent. hydrochloric acid at 100‹C. Hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acids are mentioned as suitable acids. The wood to be treated is preferably de-aerated by steam or low vacuum of about 100 to 150 mm. pressure and is steeped in the acid for one or several hours at about 100‹C. On being crushed, the wood easily disintegrates into a homogeneous mass of fibres. In some cases the acid treatment is followed by alkali treatment with caustic soda or milk of lime. The process is also applicable to the treatment of straw and other fibrous vegetable materials, the acid treatment being followed by treatment with milk of lime at a temperature below 50‹C. for 24 hours. In an example, large' pieces of pine sap-wood with an ash alkalinity of 0.55 cc. N/10 acid per gramme are steeped in twice the weight of hydrochloric acid of 0.1 per cent. strength. The acid is heated to boiling and the liquid kept at approximately 100‹C. for 3 or 4 hours. After the acid has been drawn off, the wood is crushed and reduced to fibres. In another example, straw with an ash alkalinity of 2 cc. of N/10 hydrochloric acid per gramme is cut up and boiled with over four times its weight of N/20 hydrochloric acid till de-aerated and then kept at 100‹C. for 1 hour. After removal of the acid, the residue is treated with dilute milk of lime containing 6 to 8 per cent. CaO based on the weight of the straw, for 24 hours at room temperature. After draining, the residue is readily crushed into a light-coloured straw pulp.
