512,294. Drilling. WESSELMANN - BOHRER CO. AKT.-GES. Oct. 19, 1938, No. 30271. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1937. [Class 83 (ill)] In machine tools such as drilling-machines having power and hand feeds for the tool or work and clutches for selectively connecting the required feed to a shaft, the clutch for the hand feed is secured to the shaft and co-operates with teeth on a sleeve slidable and rotatable on the shaft and normally held out of engagement by a spring, but capable of being -engaged by manipulations of the head feed lever. The quill 2 containing a drill spindle 3 is fed by a pinion 5 on a shaft 4 which may be rotated by power through a worm drive 6 and clutch 8. The shaft has a clutch sleeve 14 freely slidable and rotatable thereon having teeth 15 engageable with teeth on a collar 20 secured to the shaft, axial movement of the sleeve being produced by the hand feed levers 9 pivoted at 11 on a boss 10 and a spring 18, being provided to urge the sleeve out of engagement with the collar 20. Lateral movement of one of the levers 9 engages the clutch 14, 20 to enable the operator to feed the drill by rotation of the lever about the shaft 4, but on release of the lever by the operator the spring 18 disengages the clutch and causes teeth at the other end of the sleeve to engage teeth 16 formed on a boss 17 of the drill head 1 and so prevent the levers 9 from being rotated by friction when the shaft 4 is rotated by power or rapidly returned.
