Abstract

16,704. Bird, W. W., and Rawson, L. W. Aug. 8, 1912, [Convention date]. Drilling - machines.- A drilling-machine having a sensitive feed, has means whereby, on the drill encountering resistance, the hand feed is changed to a power feed automatically. The drill spindle is fed through a rack 11 and pinion 13, one end of the pinion having a nut 15 thereon adapted to be frictionally locked to the pinion by a spring ball 18 engaging a recess. The spindle is fed by rotating the nut by a handle 16, and. when a resistance is encountered, the nut is screwed along the pinion to press outwards a plate 25 adjustably fixed to the spindle 14. This spindle carries at its other end a clutch member 30 adapted to coact with a continuallydriven power member 31, so that as the handle 16 is further turned, this clutch is automatically engaged, the spring ball 18 riding up out of the recess and disengaging the hand feed. When hand feed only is required, the nut is connected to the pinion by a pin 17.
