Abstract

511,712. Surface condensers. WORTHINGTON-SIMPSON, Ltd., and JENNINGS, M. March 16, 1938, No. 8169. [Class 64 (iii)] A condenser for condensing the steam arising from the boiling-pans in breweries &c. comprises a rectangular casing having a hinged cover 2, and steam inlet and condensate outlet ports 8, 12 respectively, and containing a removable water-cooled unit mounted on a truck 13 supported on rails 7 and formed by a number of interchangeable tubular sections clamped together by longitudinal bolts 28 passing through the upper and lower headers of the sections. Each header is divided by a central partition 20 into two compartments and is provided on one face with water ports 25 and on the opposite face with spacing bosses 26. The ports of the lower header of the rearmost section are connected to water inlet and outlet ports 9, 10 respectively in the back of the casing. The cooling water flows from the inlet port 9 into the right-hand compartment of the lower header of the rearmost section and thence in an up and down path through the corresponding compartments of the intermediate sections to the right-hand compartment of the front section. The water thence flows into the left-hand compartment of the lower header of the front section and then in an up and down path through the corresponding compartments of the other sections to the outlet port 10. The supply of steam to the casing may be shut off when it is desired to remove the cooling unit by a valve 42, Fig. 5, having seatings 40, 41 and a flange 38 for connection to the steam inlet port 8 in the casing.
