Abstract
509,599. Electric soldering, branding, and flat irons; switches. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WRIGHT, S. R. Dec. 13, 1937, No. 34431. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electrically heated manually operable work-heating tool or device such as a soldering, branding, or flat iron, is constructed for use with low voltage and is provided with a thermostat to control the temperature at a given desired value. A cylindrical sheet metal heating element 3 having transverse slots is mounted behind the bits 1 of a soldering iron. Current is supplied from a transformer 2 by leads 9, 12, 13. The rigid metal lead 9 carries a fixed contact 6 which normally touches a movable contact 5 connected by a flexible lead 13 to the heating element 3. A bimetallic strip 7, secured at one end to the rear of the bit 1, carries the contact 5. At a predetermined temperature the expansion of the element 7 causes separation of the contacts 5 and 6 to break the electric circuit. The circuit is automatically remade when the temperature again falls. The desired temperature may be adjusted by movement of the contact 6 by a screw 10 which secures the lead 9 to an insulation block 8.
