Abstract
519,828. Thermal switches. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DAVIS, P. W. Sept. 27, 1938, No. 28082. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XI] An electric iron is provided with a lamp 17, Fig. 1, for directing light downwardly and forwardly upon ironing work. Current is suppied through a cable 35 and contacts 29, 30, Fig. 3, to a heating element 11, clamped to the sole plate 10, through a thermostatic switch 44, 45. The lamp 17 is conneced to the terminals 29, 30 through a terminal 31 and a series resistance 53 serving as an auxiliary heating element, and operates independently of the thermostatic switch. A flexible strip 42, carrying the contact 45, supports a screw 46 which is moved by a bimetallic strip 40 clamped to the sole 10 on an excessive rise in temperature, so breaking the circuit. The contacts 44, 45 are carried by insulating blocks mounted on a strip 43 extending beneath a spiral cap 47 on a rod 48.rotably mounted in the cover 13 by a knob 49. By this means the height of the screw 46 and the temperature of operation of the thermal switch may be adjusted ; and the knob is fixed in any adjusted position by a pin 51 secured to the cover 13 and engaging in any one of the notches 50 underneath the knob 49.
