Abstract

508,120. Skid-brakes for vehicles. BURRIDGE, C. March 22, 1938, No. 8726. [Class 103 (i)] A skid-brake for vehicles comprises a flexible band which may comprise a series of linked plates 2 carried by one or more radial arms 7, 7<1>, 7<11> which may be duplicated on the other side of the wheel and are mounted to swing about the wheel axis, the band being drawn beneath the wheel tyre by a jointed rod 16, lever 18 and cable 22. The arms on the two sides are respectively mounted on the hub cap 9 and on the axle. The plates 2 need not be continued above the arm 7 and can be replaced at this part by two lines of links 11 connected by a cable 5, passing over a pulley 12, to a shock-absorbing spring 6. The links 11 and cable 5 may be replaced by a pair of cables 5a one on each side of the wheel. The plates 2 have lugs 3 connected by links 4, the lugs preventing the plates from bowing inwards towards the tyre. The plates can be restrained from falling to the vertical position by a leaf spring 24 and may have spikes or protuberances 25 on both sides.
