Abstract
507,737. Testing hardness of materials. ZEISS, C., [Firm of]. Nov. 21, 1938, Nos. 33762 and 33763. Convention dates, Nov. 30, 1937 and May 23, 1938. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a penetrator and a microscope for measuring the impressions in which the penetrator is disposed on the object side lens of the microscope objective. A sleeve 2 is screwed to the tube 1 of a microscope. The mount 3 of the objective consisting of a front lens 4 and a rear lens 5 is displaceable parallel to the optical axis of the microscope against the influence of a spring 6. A small diamond pyramid 9 carries at the base an opaque silver layer and is cemented to the lens 4 with its apex in the optical axis of the microscope. Alternatively the penetrator is formed of a pyramid of transparent corundum whose base covers the entire aperture of the lens 4. In this case an immersion liquid of a refractive index corresponding to that of the penetrator is necessary between the front lens and the object to be tested. In a modification, the mount for both lenses is screwed to the tube while a parallel glass plate which completes the lens 4 is carried by a sleeve sliding against the influence of the spring, and the indentor is fixed to the glass plate.
