Description

Instruments are known for measuring the area of actual contact between the contacting surfaces of metallic and non-metallic samples. These devices contain a photovoltaic device consisting of two differentially connected photocells, which are illuminated by a common light source: one directly, and the other rays passing through the object under study.

A distinctive feature of the described device is that the non-metallic sample is made in the form of a prism of a transparent material, one of the surfaces of which is pressed against a metal sample.

The other two prism surfaces are located between the light source and one of the photocells. The illumination of the latter varies with the change in the total internal reflection of the rays from the surface of the prism in contact with the metal sample.

Эта особенность обеспечивает возможность непосредственного определени  площади контакта по величине освещенности фотоэлемента .This feature provides the ability to directly determine the contact area of the magnitude of the photocell illumination.

The drawing shows a schematic diagram of the described device. The device is arranged as follows.

5.The non-metallic sample is made in the form of a prism 1, on which the metallic sample 2 is mounted. The light from the source 3 is directed to photo cells 4 to 5.

The optical system consists of capacitors 6, lenses 7 to 8, frosted glasses 9 and diaphragms 10. Frosted glasses serve to provide uniform illumination of the prism and photo cells. The semi-transparent plate // and the ocular 12 are intended for visual observation of the actual contact area and for calibration of the instrument.

4Photo cells 4 vi 5 are included one towards the other in a balanced scheme through a mirror galvanometer / 5. Setting the galvanometer to zero is accomplished by changing the illumination of the photocell 5, achieved by moving it relative to the frosted glass 9. As the load on the sample 2 increases, the luminous flux reflected from the prism decreases as part of the light hits the contact points and is absorbed (visually are observed as dark spots on a light background). As a result, the photocell illumination 4
