Abstract

507,218. Nails; nailing. CUCKOW, A. E. E. Dec. 10, 1937, No. 34203. [Class 89 (ii)] [Also in Group VII] Articles made of wood, fibre, or other material of the same order of hardness as wood, are united by means of a wooden stemmed nail which is driven into the material whilst it is closely surrounded on all its sides over its whole length in such a manner that it is prevented from spreading laterally or bending. The nail may comprise an unheaded cylinder 1 of greenheart, pyinkado, or box wood, with a pointed end 2 and its axis parallel to the grain of the wood. The nail may be inserted in a metal container 3 formed with an open-ended cylindrical bore 4 in which works a piston 5 connected to a larger piston 6 which works in a cylindrical cavity 7 and is connected to a stem 8 surrounded by a spring 9 located between a cap 12 and a head 10 adapted to receive hammer blows. The container 3 is surrounded by a wooden sleeve 15 and its lower end is formed with a flat flange 14. Movement of the piston 6 is limited by the cap 12 and a washer 17, the lower limiting position corresponding to the piston 5 being flush with the lower end of the flange 14 and with the upper surface of the uppermost piece of wood 18. The pistons 5, 6 make easy fits in their bores 4, 7 to allow air to escape during their downward strokes.
