[Class 38 (ii)] Intermittent current is produced in a circuit including a mercury vapour are by inserting in the anode circuit the primary of a transformer T, the secondary of which has connected across its terminals a " perforated secondary anode " A<1> located between the main anode A and the cathode C. Two " secondary anodes " associated with a pair of main anodes and oppositely connected to the transformer secondary may be provided to cause the arc to alternate between the main anodes. A switch S may be provided for connecting the " secondary anode" to the main supply for striking the arc.
