Abstract

506,592. Reciprocating saws. NEILL & CO. (SHEFFIELD), Ltd., J., SWAIN, G., and BOWER, W. L. Nov. 30, 1937, No. 33016. [Class 145 (ii)] In a hack-saw machine, the blade is supported against bending in its own plane by a narrow support against which the back of the saw reciprocates; the guide support and the saw are fed in steps by irreversible mechanism at the end of each idle stroke and the line of the teeth is inclined to the back to ensure cutting during the whole of the forward movement. The saw 24, Figs. 1 and 3, is carried in a frame 16 which is reciprocated by the crank arm 51 and is guided by an arm 17 pivoted at one end to the frame of the machine, the other end being moved downwardly in steps by the feed mechanism. The saw is supported against bending in its own plane by a non-reciprocating plate 18 against which it works, this plate being mounted in a frame 20 bolted to the arms 17 and having lugs 19 which bear against the sides of the saw. The thickness of the plate 20 is less than the width of the cut so that it can follow the saw without binding. The feed mechanism, shown also in Fig. 4, is operated at the end of each idle stroke by an arm 46 mounted on shaft 45 and oscillated by linkwork from a cam 50 on the driving shaft. The arm 54 on shaft 45 rotates the outer nut 40 in the casing at the end of the working stroke so as to raise the central screw 31 and lever 17, to which the screw is connected, during the idle return stroke of the saw. The nut 40 is returned by an adjustable spring. At the beginning of the working stroke, arm 64 similarly rotates collar 58 which acts through friction clutch discs 59 to rotate the long nut 80 and feed screw 31 and arm 17 downwards. Rotation of the long nut 80 backwards is prevented by a ratchet and pawl. Return of collar 58 is also effected by an adjustable spring. Screw 31 may be rotated by handle 35 and bevel gearing to raise and lower the lever 17 quickly, the handle and screw being normally locked.
