[Class 69 (iii)] A spray pistol of the kind in which heated liquid, e.g. molten metal, is atomized by compressed air is provided with a box-like shield 21, Fig. 1, interposed between the handle and the body of the pistol so as to screen the handle from heat radiated from the pistol body and connected by a pipe 20 to the air or gas orifice of the spray nozzle and by a pipe 24 to a supply of air or gas whereby the shield is cooled. In the form shown, air is supplied through a coiled pipe 25 forming a handle, which may be surrounded by an insulating grip 27, to the box 21 which may be provided with internal baffles to a flexible pipe 20 communicating with a pipe 16. The pipe 16 is connected directly to the atomizer nozzle and through a regulable branch 17 to a blow-pipe burner 12 for heating the material in a reservoir 10. The pistol comprises a melting reservoir 10, fitted with a spray nozzle 11, Fig. 4, which is surrounded by an air nozzle 15 supplied with heated air from the coil 16. A cowl 28 surrounds the liquid reservoir and has a restricted opening 34 around the spray nozzle partially obturated by a thermally conducting baffle 35 in thermal contact with the nozzle. The burner 12 is arranged to project a flame beneath the reservoir towards the nozzle end of the pistol whence a portion of the hot gases are deflected back by the baffle and cowl and escape mainly by a restricted opening 37 in the cowl above the liquid container.
