Abstract

504,908. Winches. CLARKE, CHAPMAN, & CO., Ltd., WOODESON, W. A., and MIDGLEY. W: Dec. 23, 1938, No. 37441. [Class 78 (v)] For the raising of sea-planes &c. from rough water a winch a having a pawl-andratchet drive and a tensioning spring winds up a cable f passing along a main crane jib o and a steadying boom b to a spring-loaded overhauling weight e. To the weight e is attached the upper part c of a mechanical coupler from which hangs a coupling rope j which passes round the lower part d of the coupler, back through the part c, and over the jib o and boom b to the winding drum of a control winch m. This drum is driven through a fluid coupling which allows a man standing on the sea-plane &c. to seize a quick-release hook h depending from the part d, and pull it down to hook on the slings. The fluid coupling allows this to be done while the motor speed is slow, but when this is quickened sufficient tension is imparted to the rope j to draw down the weight e against the tensioning spring of the main winch a till the couplings c, d engage. The main winch a is then started to raise the load. Specifications 486,599, and 501,324 are referred to.
