Abstract

503,407. Vehicle hoods. MOBBS, H. Sept. 3, 1937, No. 24146. [Class 108 (i)] In a motor-car of the saloon body type the whole of the rigid front part 10 of the roof is slidable in curved guides and has a device, e.g. a sunk handle or recess 22 on its underside which may be engaged by the driver's hand for moving the part while the car .is in motion and under the control of the driver. As shown, the roof comprises a fixed rear part 9 below which fixed supports 26 are provided carrying pairs of rollers 28, 30 for guiding the slidable front part 10. The supports 26 also carry a spindle 32 to which are secured a pair of arms 34, each having a padded thumb-piece 36, and a tongue-piece 38 engaging a nut or nuts 40 adapted to be rotated by a handle 42 operable by the driver to swing the arms 34 so that the padded pieces 36 raise the sliding part 10 firmly against or flush with the fixed part 9. Runners 14 are fixed directly and runners 16 by means of a blade spring to the rear portion 12 of the part 10 and engage guides or slides 56 on the supports 26, the runners 16 pulling down the rear portion 12 after the handle 42 has been rotated to permit the roof part 10 to be moved rearwardly. When the part 10 is being moved into its forward position in which it is flush with the part 9 and in which a member 17 engages a gutter 18 on top of the windscreen 20, a roller 50 on the rear portion 10 glides up an inclined abutment 52 to ensure, completion of the movement of the part 9.
