XXII] A head-stock d for a grinding-machine &c. slidable on a column a, is provided with means -ensuring accurate guiding of the headstock The column has at its corners machined guide surfaces b, and at the back has two surfaces c exactly perpendicular to the axis of the spindle of the grinding-wheel f, and the headstock, comprising a hollow body, has thereon two datum surfaces n exactly perpendicular to the axis of 'the spindle, and parallel to the direction of movement of the headstock. Slide blocks i having flanges o, held by screws &c. against the surfaces n, project through holes in the headstock with their inner ends bearing on the surfaces c, and blocks h, adjustable by screws k in the headstock press against the surfaces b, the blocks having therein Z- shaped lubricating grooves ; the column may be of circular or other form in cross-section. At least two rows of the blocks h, i are provided ; datum surfaces and slide blocks i may be provided on two perpendicular sides of the headstock.
