Abstract

502,310. Thermionic valves; superheterodyne circuits for wireless reception. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 11, 1938, No. 17414. Convention date, June 14, 1937. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A thermionic mixe: valve has at least three grids between cathode 1 and anode 8 and two adja cent grids 2, 3, Fig. 1 which act as control grids are provided with screens 6 which extend betweer the parts of the grids near the support rods and are connected to the cathode or to a point of fixed negative potential. By dispensing with the usual positive screening grid between the control grids, the valve noise is reduced. Preferably the turns of the second control grid 3 and the third screening grid 4 are aligned. A suppressor grid 5 is provided. In the circuit shown in Fig. 2 a separate triode 9 generates the local oscillations which are applied to the second control grid 3, the incoming signal from circuit 21 being applied to the inner grid 2. To compensate the presence of local oscillations on grid 2 induced electrostatically from grid 3, a reversed phase component taken from the anode circuit of triode 9 is applied through variable condenser 24 and resistance 25 to the grid 2. The triode may be incorporated in the valve 10 and may use the same cathode.
