Abstract

419,885. Valve circuits for wireless reception. COLE, Ltd., E. K., Ekco Works, Priory Crescent, Southend-on-Sea, and BRADFIELD, G., 161, Hainault Avenue, Westcliffon-Sea. May 23, 1933, No. 14844. [Class 40 (v).] Automatic volume control potentials are applied to at least one of the electrodes of a multigrid valve of the type in which a " virtual cathode " exists on or between two of the grids by virtue of the external connections which are also arranged so that the valve electrodes act as an amplifier and an oscillator, in that order, between the main cathode and anode. As shown, said valve comprises the detectoroscillator valve A of a superheterodyne receiver, the signals being applied from an input circuit a to the first control grid 2 which is surrounded by a screen grid 3 suppressor grid 4, intermediate anode 5, second control grid 6 and main anode 7. The suppressor grid 4 may be adjacent the main anode 7. The anode 5 is connected through a tuned circuit e, condenser d, earth, and resistance c shunted by condenser b to the cathode 1, and also through condenser f to the control electrode 6 to produce oscillations of the frequency of the circuit e. The anode 5 is supplied with positive potential from the anode resistance n of the pentode intermediate frequency amplifier B which feeds a diode-triode valve C provided for second detection and low frequency amplification. The load resistance k of the diode rectifier is tapped to provide D.C. automatic volume control potentials for the grids 2, 6 of valve A and the control grid of valve B through known filter circuits. Further control is effected by the changes of potential of the anode 5 due to changes in the current flowing through resistance n. Specification 408,256 is referred to.
